UK Online Safety Bill is in its final stages and is a serious threat to our privacy and freedoms

Last week, the UK Online Safety Bill passed its third reading in the House of Lords.  This Bill means the end of end-to-end encryption and an end to online privacy for Britons.

It implies mass government surveillance of any internet available to users within the UK and its reach expands to any internet platform providing services to people in the UK.  It would enable the UK government to implement similar surveillance to what China, Russia and others have forced on the internet within their borders.

A liberal democracy should be condemning such surveillance measures – not implementing them.

The Online Safety Bill Looks Set to Shatter Privacy in the UK

The following is a blog published by Proton on 5 September 2023.

The UK Parliament is set to finalise a bill this month that threatens privacy and freedom of speech at a fundamental level. We had hoped for last-minute amendments to be tabled protecting encryption and privacy, but based on information coming from Parliament at the time of writing, this now appears to be a lost cause. The Online Safety Bill is intended to protect people from online abuse, but the law as written would instead empower the UK government to break end-to-end encryption and monitor the most private aspects of your digital life.

Proton, along with much of the tech industry, has condemned the Online Safety Bill, specifically, the clauses that would undermine end-to-end encryption. But politicians have been unwilling to listen, and there looks to be little hope for crucial changes that could save encryption.

[Also read ‘UK ministers seek to allay WhatsApp and Signal concerns in encryption row’, Guardian, 6 September 2023]

As it stands, the Online Safety Bill is one of the most concerning pieces of legislation to come out of the West in years. It would open the door to mass surveillance of the type and scale that Edward Snowden exposed in 2013. The British government would essentially be outlawing private conversations of any kind online, which is an affront to human rights and will likely put Britons in more danger, not less.

The bill is due to have its final review in the House of Lords on 6 September. Regrettably, it appears the House of Lords didn’t take this final opportunity to table any amendments that would protect encryption. So, it looks highly likely the bill will pass as it stands, along with its threats to break encryption. While the bill still hasn’t been completely finalised by Parliament, assuming it passes into law as drafted, we’re now counting on Ofcom (new window) to work closely with the industry to mitigate some of the worst effects this bill could have on privacy.

[Update: On 6 September, the House of Lords passed the Bill.  It is now in the final stages of preparation to receive Royal Assent. Weak statements by government ministers, such as the hedging from Lord Parkinson during last week’s debate, are no substitute for real privacy rights. Nothing in the law’s text has changed.  Read more: ‘The UK Government Knows How Extreme the Online Safety Bill Is’.]

Proton won’t accept the Online Safety Bill

We would be willing to aggressively defend the right to privacy in the courts as we have successfully done in Switzerland. However, we won’t do anything to put the Proton community at risk. As a company that puts privacy and security above all else, we refuse to do anything that undermines our encryption or our users’ rights, and we plan on continuing to serve the Proton community in the UK, regardless of what happens with the bill.

We haven’t broken encryption for the governments in China or Iran, and we won’t for the UK government. If the UK pursues this point, we’d sooner be barred from operating in the UK than compromise the security and privacy our community relies on.

The Online Safety Bill would destroy online privacy in the UK

The bill contains a clause that indirectly empowers the government to force companies to weaken or bypass their own encryption. We explained how this works in our previous article condemning the Online Safety Bill, and a group of human rights organisations have submitted a cogent appeal to Parliament (new window) clarifying the risks to civil rights.

End-to-end encryption underpins the secure exchange of information online. We use it at Proton to ensure no one – not us, not government agencies, nor anyone else – can access your emails, calendar events, files, and other personal data.

We expect attempts to break or undermine end-to-end encryption from repressive governments like Iran or China because the privacy these services provide allows for dissent, freedom of expression, and autonomy – principles that frighten these regimes. The fact that a modern democracy stands on the precipice of passing such a disastrous bill is a grave threat.

This also sends a chilling message to the global community. Rather than condemning the surveillance that China, Russia, and others have forced on the internet within their borders, the Online Safety Bill would enable the government to implement similar measures. It would be yet another blow against the open, uncensored internet, only this time it would come from a democracy that’s supposed to defend freedom and free speech.

As we have repeatedly explained, whenever governments try to abridge privacy, there is no such thing as partial end-to-end encryption. It either protects everyone who uses a service, or it protects no one.

This bill threatens to force companies to break end-to-end encryption at a time when Britons say they want more privacy, not less. The results would be catastrophic for Britain:

  • No one will be sure if their online conversations are private or if they’re being watched.
  • Hackers will try to exploit new weaknesses in encryption, threatening the security of financial transactions, official proceedings, business negotiations, and more.
  • Companies could flee the UK, destroying the country’s future as a thriving tech hub.
  • Authoritarian governments will try to copy the British playbook, issuing similar laws that further erode the right to privacy and free speech globally.
  • Many services will no longer be available to UK residents because companies will prefer to pull out of the country rather than deliberately put their users’ privacy at risk.

None of this is news to Parliament. The UK government has had plenty of opportunity to listen to concerns from the tech and security industry, but so far it hasn’t. Instead, it’s suggested technological solutions that simply don’t exist. No matter what politicians claim, you can’t simultaneously scan everyone’s messages for illegal content while preserving privacy.

How to save encryption in the UK

We’ve been calling for UK lawmakers to hear the concerns of the technology industry and reject this bill, which directly threatens end-to-end encryption and the right of people in the UK to privacy. However, by not publishing any amendments that remove the obligation to break encryption, the House of Lords has missed an opportunity to save encryption.

Considering the political pressure, it’s highly likely that the bill will be passed. Should it be passed as expected, we must look to Ofcom to listen to the hundreds of security, privacy, and tech experts that have raised concerns and work closely with the industry on the privacy implications in the implementation of this bill. Ofcom has an opportunity to mitigate the threats to encryption and, most importantly, work with the industry to protect the privacy of UK citizens.

To our community in the UK, it’s time to make your voices heard. This bill threatens your basic rights to privacy and freedom of speech. Don’t let your government take your civil liberties without a fight.

We understand and appreciate the British government’s desire to make the internet a better place for all because this is our mission, too. People may disagree about the exact steps to get there. But privacy and free expression must be part of any world we want to create. End-to-end encryption is a technological guarantor of these rights.

Proton is ready to work with Ofcom and the UK government to advance online safety while protecting end-to-end encryption for everyone for good.

What is it that the “Ruling Elite” are afraid of?
5. Jesus of Nazareth, Mary Magdalene and the Knights Templar.
The Knights Templar found something very valuable and stunning underneath the floor in Solomon’s Temple. There was a hidden passage that led down underground and ended in a big room which had been used for practicing the Religion of the Mother Goddess and the Divine Feminine. This shows that the Men of Power indeed know that the Universe is feminine, and rituals devoted to the Mother Goddess have been extremely important for the Ruling Elite. And why is that? Because that’s of course where the power lies and that’s the key to conquering the 96%.

Newer research shows that Jesus actually didn’t die on the cross, and it’s easy to find material these days, showing that he and Mary traveled west and settled down in France, and they both lived a long life and had children. I am not going to go into details about that either, because detailed information can be found elsewhere[1], but this is the whole thing with the power struggle between the Global Elite; who is of the purest ‘Jesus line’, or rather, the female line.

Now, if we think about it; who can Jesus have been? And who would have any interest in letting a seemingly ethical and just being come down to Earth and spread his message?

Let’s say that the Sirians wanted unity; they wanted to bring the peoples of the Earth under one umbrella through religion. What would they do, and whom would they choose to do it?

Well, with all we know, we don’t have to be overly clever to figure it out. What are the most ‘supernatural’ things we know about Jesus? We know he was born from a virgin and his mother was Maria (Mary). Who else goes under the name, or title, Mary? The Mother Goddess does. And who is representing Mother Goddess in the 4% Universe? The Queen of the Stars, i.e. the Orion Queen. Furthermore, who was born from a virgin? ENKI vs. EA, because he was born from an unfertilized egg!

And there we have it. The virgin is the Queen of the Stars and the son who was born without a father was EA. So, Jesus was from Orion, in other words, working for the Sirians.

The collapse of the Roman Empire. Britain is descending into hell. I live here, I see it daily. The country has WEF puppets at the helm, including chancellor of the exchequer. MPs either incredibly stupid, or being paid to do as they are told. Next round of covid jabs ready for distribution DESPITE all the evidence that they are UNSAFE and INEFFECTIVE. No money for the care of the elderly, nhs on its knees and yet spenditure of over 6million pounds a DAY to house illegal immigrants in 3 star hotels, three meals a day, free healthcare and £40 a week pocket money.

The censorship is to prevent you from being able too determine the truth and upon that make reasonable decisions. I then fully expect another pandemic too be implemented but even more tightly controlled forcing everybody too get vaccinated.

I am starting to realize they have already lost control especially of the government tax and spend because of their corruption etc.

They are putting in controls for a burst economic bubble is the best way too visualize it.

Just putting it out there. When I was on Gmail, I emailed a women who’d wrote a book exposing our government here for a raft of dubious and borderline criminal activities. I hit “send” – and it took FOUR HOURS for that email to send. In the meantime, I had no access to my email account as it was locked onto that email. After that, all emails I sent took sometimes up to an hour and a half to send, unless I’d written something entirely innoccuous – literally if I’d talked about the weather and nothing else. Often, I would be writing an email and would drift into some contentious issue, or use some kind of word with a charge on it, and the keyboard would slow right down so that it took up to a second for each letter to land. Very frustrating and disconcerting. I got so sick of it I was driven to find a monitoring-free email provider – and discovered Proton. This was around five years ago. So, make no mistake, if you’re using common email providers, it’s pretty much guaranteed you’re being watched …..

I had my gmail, hotmail and mail accounts closed down in return for warning people about the jabs. Computer hacked multiple times. Permanently banned from facebook. Three days ago locked out from making any more comments on you tube even though I was already shadow banned. I understand where you are coming from.

Do not use those portals.

You want too use their systems then you must play by their rules. It is as simple as that.

Use Gab, Bitchute, Rumble.

Note also:- Amazon and Microsoft now block many emails even their own. Amazon Prime I expired because they can no longer email me because of the censorship.

That last point is hilarious.

All emails when you press send they are run through a censorship function to determine if allowed too send. The expose website is blocked on me forwarding emails too myself because of this censorship.

I actually contacted my paid email provider who explained that they are forced too do this by government so I just know it happens.

People need to start creating their own encryption techniques and junk the encryption provided by big/tech and the government if they want too keep their privacy.

I’ve been with Proton for years, and admire their stance: they have a free basic VPN too, and Linux OS is fine when you get used to it.
Why fund Microsoft/Google etc. to spy on you, when they are part of the satnic cult/cabal/cartel that is undeniably out to destroy We the People.

Maybe the alternative internet sytems described by Mike Adams on Brighteon will take off and set us free in this respect.

For years I have forecasted that humanity will enter a war between quantum computers vs quantum encryption (“quantum evil” now entering the stage with A.I. and self-improving Black Goo), and we are now seeing such a spiritual war happening in front of our eyes, since nanotech is already inside many people

Those who can turn a blind eye, find profit or control from the Great Reset are the globalists, secret societies, media moguls, Big Pharma etc., so those puppets of Satan believe they “will own everything and be happy”.

We all need to put a roof over our heads and food on the table, but after that we ALL need to sacrifice some of our spare time spent watching games or TV, and make our priority “The Fall of the Cabal” (see the movies by Janet Ossebaard).
That way we can create the paradise on Earth we deserve.
