Sources have told The Independent that MI6 failed to clear Labour peer Peter Mandelson for the job as ambassador to the United States largely because of concerns over his business links to China.
There were also worries that his past links to the disgraced financier and convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein “would compromise him.”

Lord Peter Mandelson, the UK’s ambassador to the United States, has come under intense scrutiny and mounting calls to resign following the emergence of new details about his past association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
On Wednesday, Mandelson publicly expressed regret for maintaining his friendship with Epstein “far longer than I should have done,” acknowledging that further “very embarrassing” details about their relationship would likely surface. Mandelson did not resign; he was sacked on Thursday as the scandal continues to unfold
Referring to a report in The Independent earlier today, TalkTV host Kevin O’Sullivan highlighted that MI6 failed to clear Mandelson through the vetting process, but Keir Starmer pushed through Mandelson’s appointment as UK Ambassador to the United States anyway.
Additionally, “Morgan McSweeney, Sir Keir’s chief of staff since last October, is rumoured to have blocked efforts to remove the controversial ambassador to the UK despite fresh revelations into the relationship between him and convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein,” The Independent wrote.
Chief political writer at Spiked, Brendan O’Neill told Kevin O’Sullivan: “If this is true, I think it will really blow up.”
