Starmer’s Business Secretary is caught lying about his qualifications; he has never been a solicitor

First, we had Rachel from Accounts lying about being an economist. Now we have Johnny the Trainee lying about being a solicitor.

Jonathan Reynolds, the Labour government’s Business Secretary since July 2024, has been lying about his professional background. He claimed to have worked as a solicitor in Manchester city centre but admitted a few years before to quitting his trainee course after 10 months to run for Member of Parliament instead.

He made his extraordinary claim of being a solicitor in Parliament. This claim has also been reflected in his biographies and recent press coverage.

The Johnny the Trainee story was broken by Guido Fawkes on Tuesday.

“The business secretary has never been registered on the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s register – on which all practicing and non-practicing solicitors are registered. You can’t say you’re a solicitor without this as it is a legally-protected name – to do so would contravene the terms of the Solicitors Act 1974,” Guido Fawkes explained.

Meanwhile, as Guido Fawkes pointed out, Rachel from Accounts was caught on Tuesday morning upgrading the journals in which her economics essays were published.
