Welsh farmers raise their voices against government’s “sustainable” farming policies

In the wake of mass farmer protests across Europe, there are growing calls from within the UK farming industry for British farmers to launch their own demonstrations, Farmers Weekly reported.

The magazine goes on to state that farmers across the UK have become increasingly frustrated and concerned about inequality within the supply chain, which currently sees many receiving unfair prices for their produce while retailers show record profits.

But there’s more to the story.

Welsh farmers were due to hold an open meeting at Welshpool Livestock Market yesterday to discuss “how to make rural voices heard”, including a possible demonstration in Cardiff Bay, according to Farmers Weekly.

Also yesterday, a meeting was held at Brecon Livestock Market in Powys County about proposals for the proposed Sustainable Farming Scheme (“SFS”).

Reverend Simon Bowkett attempted to attend the Brecon Livestock Market meeting due to his concerns over the proposed government policies.  In the video below he explains why he was unable to attend. “As a chaplain, I am very concerned for people,” he said.

Wales is a largely rural country.  Approximately 84% of Wales’ land area is used for agriculture.  Holdings in Wales tend to be small family farms.   According to Wikipedia, farm incomes in Wales have fallen over the years as a result of cheap food policies in the UK, the lowering of world commodity prices and the removal of production-based subsidies.

Although Wales forms part of the UK, agriculture is devolved meaning that decision-making powers reside in the Welsh government.

In July 2022, the Welsh Government published a draft SFS the biggest shift in Welsh agricultural policy for a generation or more.

“The biggest threat to food production globally over the medium to long term is climate change,” the Welsh government states.  The Government also states it wants the reduction in Welsh food production – to plant trees or create habitat – “to be seen as protecting the food producing capacity of our land in the context of climate change.”

Pause and consider those two statements together for a moment.  They echo the words of climate doomsday cultist John Kerry at the AIM for Climate Summit in May 2023 when he claimed that the destruction of farming was front and centre in the fight against climate change.

A year after the draft, in July 2023, an update on the SFS was published.  The next stage in the process; the public consultation. In a move that echoes events in Scotland, decisions on the final design of the scheme will not be made until after this consultation has concluded and the responses analysed, The Scottish Farmer reported at the time.

(Related: Scottish farmers’ protest: “Farmers are getting pushed to the limit – We’ve had enough”)

The final SFS consultation was opened in December 2023 and will close on 7 March 2024.

On Monday, the National Farmers Union (“NFU”) Cymru (Wales) urged its members to engage with the final consultation on the SFS. NFU Cymru President Aled Jones said: “The Sustainable Farming Scheme proposals to date have framed Sustainable Land Management through the lens of the environment alone and have failed to recognise the vital economic, social and cultural outcomes provided by Welsh farming, alongside our core role of producing safe, nutritious and affordable food.”

Yesterday, Welsh farmer Gareth Wyn Jones told GB News that British farmers could join those on the Continent in protesting the government.

“We’re losing a lot of top-quality land to solar panels to building,” he said. “All these things are taking away our food security in the UK.”

“Governments in the UK need to listen and be very very careful about the way they are treating people who produce the food that feeds them,” he said.

In the video above Wyn Jones also said: “Something else that we’re fed up with is that mainstream media just keep kicking us in the gonads. All the time. They keep blaming agriculture and livestock, especially for this so-called climate crisis.”

Yesterday, Wyn Jones took to Twitter to explain more about those who “kick farmers in the gonads.”

“I’m p*ssed off,” he said.  “P*issed off that some people are trying to call me an extremist, a right-winger.  What the ducking hell are they talking about man.”

How can we support our farmers?

Farmer’s son and media commentator James Melville has launched ‘No Farmers, No Food’, a new campaign that aims to “save the farming industry” and pressure governments into actions that benefit farmers.

While previously it was a hobby culminating in writing articles for Wikipedia (until things made a drastic and undeniable turn in 2020) and a few books for private consumption, since March 2020 I have become a full-time researcher and writer in reaction to the global takeover that came into full view with the introduction of covid-19. For most of my life, I have tried to raise awareness that a small group of people planned to take over the world for their own benefit. There was no way I was going to sit back quietly and simply let them do it once they made their final move.

I haven’t bought food in supermarkets for three years now. I only buy at various Farmers Markets and small independents. I get treated like a valued customer rather than a criminal in these ever-increasing “show us your receipt to prove you have paid, or we’re unlawfully detaining you behind our barriers” dictatorship supermarkets – AND I pay in cash for everything. I am sick and tired of seeing our beautiful countryside being destroyed and disappearing under a sea of solar panels and cheap and nasty new build housing estates. Enough is enough.

I also use cash whenever possible. Where do you source your non meat items?

I haven’t bought meat from supermarkets for two years; its no good. There is very little actual food available from these horrible supermarkets. I’m on a low carb diet, but I do struggle to get any kind of healthy fruit and veg & eggs, cheese, cream, butter, etc…
Hoping someone here might know of a good source in britain?

Of course they should, they are more sustainable when they work with the land and listen to themselves instead of jumping through hoops which through misleading information, self made rules (traps – legistslation introduced without consent, designed for them to fail so that the justification is thereto arrest the land, power grab! No farms left by 2030, not on your nelly, Agenda 21 can do one. Farmers can take back their integrity, put their land in private trust and trust what they know, and the earth will back them. To save land is to save people and humanity:)

Government is not fit for purpose. Until more of the dumb masses wake up and governments are removed the criminals will go on kowtowing to their owners. All institutes like the World economic fleecing, the world health obliteration etc need to face trial then farmers and the rest of us can have our lives back. Let’s not pretend this BS is anything other than a blatant way of depopulation, as the UN puts it ‘by any means necessary.’ These idiots have such big egos they will destroy themselves in the process.
