General practitioners in Britain claim that they are overworked and cannot cope. But they’re lazy or incompetent – or they’re lying, Dr. Vernon Coleman says.
To help you test this for yourself, Dr. Coleman has devised a quick test to score your GP’s working style.

GPs in Britain claim that they are overworked and cannot cope. But they’re lazy or incompetent – or they’re lying.
More and more doctors now fob patients off on “assistants” – claiming that they’re too busy to see or speak to patients. But the figures show that doctors do far less work today than they did two, three, four or five decades ago.
Today, the average GP in the UK works between 23 and 24 hours a week. And figures show that there are more doctors per 100,000 patients than there were decades ago.
Doctors used regularly to deal with emergencies, to admit sick patients directly to hospital wards and to routinely visit patients at home if they were ill or frail.
A couple of decades ago, the vast majority of doctors cared for their work and their patients and tried to be of use. They were driven by vocation and a sense of pride. Some (a few) of today’s doctors are doubtless good and useful. Sadly, on balance, too many new doctors are driven only by greed and self-interest. They are of little practical use and actually do far more harm than good.
Answer all the questions below with one of three answers. Score 10 for YES and 0 for NO. Note that these questions, and your answers, do not establish that your doctor is a good clinician.
- If you need an urgent appointment will your doctor see you the day you ring?
- Can you get a standard appointment in less than a week?
- Can you see the doctor of your choice?
- Can you see a doctor without an unqualified receptionist asking personal questions?
- Does your doctor take blood samples, remove stitches, syringe ears, etc., without referring you to someone else?
- Does your doctor insist on seeing you at least once every six months if you need regular prescriptions?
- Does your doctor always see you face-to-face?
- Does your doctor visit patients at home if they are too ill to get to the surgery?
- Does your doctor visit patients at home at night, at the weekend and on bank holidays?
- If you need to speak to your doctor urgently, can you usually speak to him on the telephone?
Now check the scores.
If you scored 100 then you have a Superdoc – five stars with a Golden Stethoscope.
If you scored 80 to 95 then you have a very good, caring doctor. Four and a half stars
If you scored 60 to 80 then your doctor is trying, but could do considerably better. Four stars.
If you scored 40 to 60 then your doctor is average only. Three stars.
If you scored 20 to 40 then your doctor is below average and probably of little practical value. Two stars.
If you scored under 20 then your doctor is an ignorant and incompetent buffoon who should be doing something else for a living – preferably a job that doesn’t involve live human beings. One Star.

The last time I had a good gp was 2019. He left the practice at the end of that yr. he knew what was coming and wanted no part in it. He found a job in research. I now avoid the gp practice, but all the gp’s work has now been passed onto Nurse practitioners, practice nurses and ursine assistants.
It is dire out there and looking at a failing economy can only get worse.
Well I got the lowest 0 points as I have no doctor.
My challenge in life now 60 is never to see a doctor again from what has been revealed through COVID.
I learn all the time about my health and actually it has improved a lot since COVID.
Ditto
from personal experience doctors ( G P ) are like politicians, when their mouth moves their lying ! I beat their blood pressure cult with vit. K2 and cheated the joint replacement racket with Tumeric . just makes me furious !!
totally useless cowards the lot of ’em at my surgery, pushing more jans, pushing that stupid ‘lose weight pill’ too
Who to you? . they do where l go but not to me .😌they know where l stand. But they give my phone number to NHS ! to harras us for over 4 years. These bastards never give up!😡 DEFUND THE national harm service !!. Only trusted people receive my number now .
my doctor is the BEST, have none;))
A couple of years before the scamdemic I got shot of my doctor. I don’t use the death service anymore. They are far too arrogant and pushy. I’ve had appointments made for me for one reason or another. I’ve ignored them for years. I don’t engage with them-there are more than enough propandised people on the streets to deal with who will not accept they’ve been brainwashed even though government.documents prove otherwise.
Totalitarianism is raising its ugly head everywhere you look. We are heading for the UK becoming like nazi Germany. It is extremely concerning as most people where I live are woefully stupid and cannot see the warning signs. It seems as though antisocial media is the new nazi snitch line. I feel sorry for them but I won’t lose any sleep if these idiots get bumped off -they simply won’t listen.
💯👍
Good for you

My Father is a widow and suffers with Alzheimers. I have full power of attourney over him and registered it with his GP during Covid. He went out every day to town during using public transport. Through out it all he remained well and never suffered so much as a cold. We kept him jab free until April of 2023 when to my horror we were informed that nurses from his GP surgery had been and jabbed him at home without my consent.
On challenging the surgery reception I was told they didn’t have my power of attourney on record despite me personally delivering it in 2021 at the surgery window where I was forced to wear a paper mask to gain entry.
I am advised that as this is their stance there is little I can do. The 1st thing I did was give them a further copy at a cost to myself and demand that they confirm receipt in writing.
This aside I wouldn’t trust a GP again after what they have willingly done to the trusting public. There is a hypicratic Oath that ontains the words ” first do no harm” well they certainly have and for monetary gain.
The only reason I would see a doctor is due to injury.
Hi Don Crawshaw, you sound like you’re a good son to your father. I, like you, would have been spitting mad with the nurse taking advantage of a very obviously vulnerable person. That nurse needs to be under inquiry, how many other vulnerable people has she taken advantage of?
