The UK is at risk of blackouts due to high electricity demand and low wind power generation, with peak demand reaching nearly 48 GW.
The National Grid’s Future Energy Scenarios project peak demand to rise to 65 GW in 2030 and 81 GW in 2035, driven by increased use of heat pumps and electric vehicles (“EVs”).
The UK’s current generating capacity is insufficient to meet this demand, with a potential shortfall of at least 30 GW, and there are no plans to build new gas capacity to address this gap.

We Are Close To Blackouts Now – But What About 2030?

Electricity demand peaked even higher yesterday evening at nearly 48 GW, and with low winds today, power supply will be tight again tonight [Friday, 10 January].
We will no doubt muddle through again, but nobody in the media seems to be pointing to the elephant in the room; the fact that demand for electricity will start to rise rapidly as we transition to heat pumps and EVs.
The Future Energy Scenarios (“FES”), published by the National Grid last year, projected that peak demand would rise to 65 GW in 2030, and 81 GW come 2035:
Even with both the 9 GW of interconnector capacity and our full CCGT [combined cycle gas turbine] fleet working flat out, we would be lucky to get 50 GW currently. (On Tuesday, I/Cs [interconnectors] ran at about 6 GW because of outages).
Yet there are no plans to build new gas capacity, the output from Hinkley C will barely offset the shutdown of older nuclear plant and extra wind capacity planned could only supply a couple of gigawatts (“GW”) at most on a windless day like today.
And this will not simply be a matter of an odd hour of peak demand. The FES already assumes that a lot of demand smoothing will take place, EVs charging at night and so on, so the daily range will be much less than now.
In the last 24 hours, demand has averaged 39 GW. On a pro-rata basis, the 81 GW in 2035 is likely to be at least 67 GW.
According to the FES calculations, for instance, in 2035 residential heat pumps will draw 40 TWh a year, about 8 TWh a month in winter. That works out at 11 GW and probably a lot more in really cold weather. And that assumes they are run evenly over 24 hours a day, an optimistic assumption.
EVs will also add significantly to electricity demand during off-peak.
It is therefore likely that daily demand will exceed 70 GW in cold weather. While pumped storage and batteries might help out for an hour or two in the early evening, they will need recharging afterwards, so will contribute nothing over 24-hour periods.
Instead, we will still need at least 70 GW of dispatchable generating capacity.
At the moment we barely have 40 GW.

I have solar panels on the roof of my home which provides electricity I use before it goes into the grid, with one battery, but I’m thinking of having 2 and being off the electricity grid altogether but it is often sunny here (not England) and we get lots of potential energy supplied by the sun. I have prepared my home to make it as energy efficient as possible, LED lighting instead of the old fashioned way. I have movement sensors in the ceilings of major movement areas, like hallways, toilets and the kitchen, which automatically turn lights on and off after passing. Kitchen and Toilets, set at 5 minutes ,then you have to move for them to come on again. I turn the water heater off and put it on for 3-4 hours once or twice a week to keep hot water available in my home (2 of us) otherwise the hot water heater is boosting the water heat constantly and that increases the electricity costs tremendously. I have zoned reverse cycle air conditioning, which I set to a comfortable cold temperature of 14 degrees Centigrade (cool) – 19 is the recommended temperature, but I find that too cold. Thus, my electricity bill last 2 month period was $18 for 2 months, where before changing over to solar, it was on average $400 up.
England was always cloudy, as I seem to recall, so you are more at the mercy of your Government, I suppose.
your not considering your solar purchases when describing your savings . what happens when your battery dies ? can you buy another ? solar panel quits , can you buy another and how much ? there will be no easier way in the end .

I live in a bungalow with a simple 30 year old oil boiler and a wood/coal fire/oven & hob. I can maintain these, for I understand them.

A few days ago I listened to a programme in which a financial analyst talked about how people were comparing Reeves’ Budget to that from Liz Truss \ Kwasi Kwarteng. This man said that a more fitting comparison was with that from Dennis Healey in 1973. Labour have done pretty much what they did in 1973 only made it worse.

That article has the rotas for the times each area gets cut off. It tells you about the letter on you energy bill that identifies which area you live in, see on your bill a capital letter in bold and in a black square.

It’s globalist BS. Putin didn’t turn off the gas, zelensky did. He “refused to renew the agreement” that allowed gas to flow through the ukraine from russia to you. Because he cares about you.

Sky high energy costs with the prospect of black outs as our sources for keeping energy security were shut down. This at a time when soaring demand for electricity for AI and the need to charge the BEVs being foisted upon us despite CO2 having nothing to do with the natural climate change that is occurring. So, some genius decided we should depend on technology that is useless when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow or is too windy. All the while getting rid of anything that is needed to back up the fluctuating supply of the not so green energy supply.
My AI uses 66Kwh of power every day. I have them scuttling all over the house making sure no carbon gets in or out. I usually send two to the shops every day – one to pick out the food, the other to watch his back. My best AI is called Frank. He watches over me all day like the best friend you never had.

Here is a good example of something the Govt has carefully kept us all ignorant of. Have you even heard of the CAN Bill? – You will have when you read this: ‘What Fresh Hell is This?’ ‘The Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill’.
A Private Members’ Bill is currently wending its way through Parliament. Called the Climate and Nature Bill (CAN), it threatens to wreck the U.K. economy, damage lives and undermine democracy.
And that’s just for starters! It makes Theresa May’s Net Zero legislation look like a walk in the park.
