The UK’s gas reserves have dropped to a concerning low, with only a week’s worth of supply remaining, as the country prepares for low wind speeds and freezing temperatures.
According to Centrica, the owner of British Gas, the UK’s storage sites are currently only half full, which is 26% lower than the same time last year.
The low gas reserves are particularly concerning due to Britain’s reliance on wind farms, which has made shortages more likely when wind speeds fall, especially during periods of cold weather.
The current energy supply from wind is only 6.9%, and the country recently came “within a whisker of blackouts” due to calm weather, with gas power plants being paid over £2 million an hour to keep the lights on.
The Telegraph reported that a spokesman for the Prime Minister insisted on Friday that the UK had enough natural gas supplies to make it through the winter, and said reports that Britain had come close to blackouts were “not true”.
A No 10 spokesman said: “We are confident we will have a sufficient gas supply and electricity capacity to meet demand this winter, due to our diverse and resilient energy system.”
Chris O’Shea, Centrica’s chief executive, has expressed concerns over the UK’s low gas storage levels, stating that the country is an outlier in Europe in terms of the role of storage in its energy system. “We are now seeing the implications of that,” he said.
O’Shea emphasised the importance of long-duration energy storage in balancing a system reliant on renewables, particularly as the UK works towards its Clean Power 2030 goal.
He called for government support to expand the Rough Gas storage facility in the North Sea, which he claims would save households £100 on gas and energy bills each winter.
The low gas storage comes as the country faces calm weather until the end of the week, in others words wind turbines will not be turning, and the Met Office has issued an amber warning for cold weather, with temperatures expected to drop to as low as -15C to -20C in parts of Scotland and the North of England on Friday evening.

Since the warming of the earth, this won’t be a problem. The cold won’t be as cold as it was. No need to heat.
Quite right Igrid I don’t know what all the fuss is about….perhaps we’ll even have wildfires in this country soon. I’m also sure that our current PM would never tell lies to us about our energy situation 😀
…i’m behind here Rhoda, what a nefarious beginning to 2025…the link to the Los Angeles Smart City 2028 pdf is included in the article… https://www.nowtheendbegins.com/los-angeles-smart-city-smartla-2028-palisades-fire/ … and pdf of Alfred Russell’s book on dangers and uselessness of vaccination… https://unbekoming.substack.com/p/vaccination-proved-useless-and-dangerous?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=355417&post_id=154448654&utm_campaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=true&r=1uo2p8&triedRedirect=true&utm_medium=email …btw there’s at least one great reference to articles by Dr Robert Yoho on this substack on chlorine dioxide solution, it’s miracle like properties and impact i received first hand!…
First, they shut down the coal mines; then demolished the coal-fired power stations (didn’t mothball them, made sure they couldn’t be used again, not even in an emergency). Then they cut back North Sea oil and gas production, to put reliance on foreign imports along with increased costs. All in the name of “doing our bit” for climate change; while China opens a new coal-fired power station every month, fed from Oz and SA. But hey, the coal and the gas and the oil will still be there to be exploited once we’ve all been reduced to the requisite numbers. Any government worth its salt would ensure their country was as self sufficient as possible; the evidence before our eyes tells us that the very opposite is happening in plain sight. Deliberate destruction of our way of life, your “government” is not your friend.

The poor don’t use gas to heat their homes anyway. I haven’t had heating for 15 years. You use blankets. Only the rich have “fires” and “heat pumps”.
When I was younger I lived in a house with no heating at all upstairs. In winter, ice used to form on the insides of the windows in the room where I slept. It never bothered me, but now, at my age, severe cold would kill me.
I could wrap myself in blankets, but I would still be inhaling cold air. Recently I tried turning the heating down to save a bit of money. I got pain my chest that was incredibly painful and it put me in great fear of power cuts.
Old people need heating.
Britton is being lead by a bunch of dumbass politicians, much like Canada with the Liberal dumbass Trudeau and his WEF cabinet.
It’s not just Britain that is being destroyed by the Net Zero tyrants.
“Germany Lets Economy Plunge to Meet Climate Change Goals”
“Habeck’s official title is Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. One must question why economics and climate protection are paired in such a forced manner when one counteracts the other.”

The nasty Russians tried to sell cheap gas to Europe. How dare they!
“A PRIVATE Members’ Bill is currently wending its way through Parliament. Called the Climate and Nature Bill (CAN), it threatens to wreck the UK economy, damage lives and undermine democracy”
Kathy Gyngell: “if this Bill becomes law, the country will be unrecognisable in 10 years’ time. There will be energy and food shortages, industry will be decimated, private transport and foreign holidays a thing of the past. What we take for granted today will be unaffordable for most”
