A recent fire at the Vistra Moss Landing Power Plant and Energy Storage Facility in Northern California, one of the world’s largest lithium-ion battery storage facilities, has poisoned a vital nature reserve in the area.
The battery storage facility was used to store power from solar panels during the day and provide it to consumers in the evening.
Because the disaster has been caused by “renewable,” “clean” energy sources, those who campaign against nuclear power due to environmental concerns suddenly seem not to be overly concerned about the impact of “renewable,” “clean” energy on the environment and wildlife.

The Vistra Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility, located in Moss Landing, California, is the world’s largest battery storage plant. A fire broke out at the facility on 16 January 2025 and was largely extinguished by 21 January 2025. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but an investigation is ongoing.
Scientists at San Jose State University found high levels of nickel, manganese, and cobalt in the soil within 2 miles of the Vistra Moss Landing Power Plant and Energy Storage Facility, with concentrations of these toxic heavy metals hundreds of times higher than before the fire.
The fire initially led to claims by the US Environmental Protection Agency and local authorities that no toxins were released, but subsequent measurements by San Jose State University scientists contradict these claims.
Dr. Ivano Aiello, chair of San José State’s Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, stated that the heavy metals were found only in the top layer of soil, suggesting they were recent and directly linked to the battery fire.
Local residents have reported suffering from headaches, sore throats, nausea and other conditions they believe are linked to the fire, with a Facebook group of nearly 3,000 people in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties sharing their concerns.
The incident has not received national attention, probably due to the facility’s role in storing solar power, with some critics arguing that the same voices who oppose nuclear power for environmental concerns are silent about the damage caused by their preferred energy source.
The affected nature reserve is the Elkhorn Slough, a vital ecosystem in the area, and the increased levels of toxic heavy metals pose a significant threat to the local environment and wildlife.

I cycle a lot either on the road or off road and often people ask me if my bike is electric – so i tell them it’s not as electric bikes are not environmentally friendly due to the batteries that use cobalt mining by slaves and deadly lithium pools – also electric bikes are very demanding on the brakes, tyres, drive train (chain, front chain ring, rear cassette) and they need changing much more often. Finally I inform them of a friend that has an electric bike and it cost him £1,700 for a service due to requiring a new battery etc. That really hits home.
Hi Rhoda,
Another sensible article.
It is fairly obvious by now that lithium batteries are dangerous.
I can remember electric milk floats, none of those caught fire.
The politicians must have invested their money in the EV dream.
Because it’s all turning sour and failing they have to push it onto us again.
A friend of mine charged some small lithium batteries, turned the charger off and went to bed.
In the early morning his dog was barking, barking to alert them to the smoke filling the house.
The house could have been burnt down if the dog had been asleep.
Lithium batteries are unstable and very dangerous, on charge or not.
your right
Clayton, are you based in Canada?
yes
Which tongue is your “mother tongue”-English or French?
English
DO- most empowering initials!
You say “It is fairly obvious by now that lithium batteries are dangerous.” I certainly agree, nevertheless, I have become somewhat dependent on 5 amp hour lithium batteries when working outdoors (drilling, sawing, impact driving etc.) -far away from any available electric sockets. I do have a generator, but that weighs something (50kg)-and so hard to lug around! These lithium powered tools are so convenient.
I have only used branded tools/batteries the last five or so years I have been using them-and believe me, I use, and recharge these tools daily, without any issues (so far!).
From what I can gather, the vast majority (if not all) of these conflagration incidences we read about are due to very cheap (Chinese?) battery copies that may fit the (OE) original equipment, but what of their quality??
It is very tempting to buy something at the quarter of the price that will do the same job-but does it?
All lithium batteries have their issues, no doubt, but the size of the ones in EV’s are simply breathtaking!
I’d like to hear your thoughts.
Hi Islander,
You have found those tools to be useful, well done.
To be on the safe side, only charge them outside in the shed.
Then if they do set on fire, you only loose the shed.
Remember those EV cars have already sunk two ships.
Most EV’s are banned on ships and ferry’s.
Thanks Dave for that.
They are “useful” primarily because these tools are cordless-you don’t end up tripping over the leads and falling all over the shop!
My hearing aid batteries are also lithium-any more advice???
https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/InRMRocxx0I problem reaction solution their all part and parcel with a game being played against the people ..
what is a dangerous plant doing that close to a natural reserve to begin with? indeed, batteries are not safe. I read of several people whose electric bicycles caught fire, too. And some car carriers refuse electric cars. The only natural sources of fuel are wood and to an excent, petroleum I think. Those to come from nature. All the rest does not. These people are so distant from nature they probably do not know that milk comes from a cow. Oh wait, they probably drink soy milk ! Read the ingredients on the box next time you pass the milk fridges.

trump is creating tariffs so smith will arm the border ( immigrants uniforms ) she stated herself the rcmp was short staffed mmm her only option is immigration
this is moving quickly
Goodness, people really don’t seem to learn except the hard way, and even then they hope doing the same stupid thing over and again will somehow yield a different outcome.
