AstraZeneca has admitted in court for the first time that its covid injection can cause deadly blood clotting. Within days of the news breaking in the UK, there was an uproar in India over India’s version of the Oxford-AstraZeneca injection.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca covid‑19 vaccine, sold under the brand names Covishield and Vaxzevria among others, is a viral vector vaccine. It was developed in the United Kingdom by Oxford University and British-Swedish company AstraZeneca.

Although vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (“VITT”) has been accepted as a potential side effect for two years, it marks the first time the company has admitted in court that its injection can cause the condition, The Telegraph reported on Sunday. 

AstraZeneca is being sued in a class action over claims that its vaccine caused death and serious injury in dozens of cases.

The first case was lodged last year by Jamie Scott. Fifty-one cases have been lodged in the High Court, with victims and grieving relatives seeking damages estimated to be worth up to £100 million.

AstraZeneca’s admission was made in a legal defence to Scott’s High Court claim.

In a letter of response sent in May 2023, AstraZeneca told lawyers for Mr Scott that “we do not accept that TTS is caused by the vaccine at a generic level”. 

But in a legal document submitted to the High Court in February, AstraZeneca said: “It is admitted that the AZ vaccine can, in very rare cases, cause TTS. The causal mechanism is not known. Further, TTS can also occur in the absence of the AZ vaccine (or any vaccine). Causation in any individual case will be a matter for expert evidence.”

TTS is short for thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome – a medical condition where a person suffers blood clots along with a low platelet count. Platelets typically help the blood to clot.

Lawyers for the claimants argue that VITT is a subset of TTS, although AstraZeneca does not appear to recognise the term.

After AstraZeneca admitted that its covid injection causes blood clots, a political controversy erupted in India.  It led to questions over why the Indian government approved Covishield, which is the Indian version of the company’s covid vaccine. Doctors have said that while the injection does carry minor risks of a blood clot, it far outweighs the health risks from covid infection.

Trigger warning: Unfortunately, Sharma defends the vaccines and claims the risks from covid are far greater than the blood clots from “vaccines.” To add to her faults, she labels those who question the safety of the covid injections as “anti-vaxxers.”   After more than three years of numerous doctors, scientists and others worldwide raising awareness of the harms and death caused by covid injections, not to mention the many persistent lies told about covid, ignorance can no longer be used as an excuse. However, try to look past Sharma’s faults to hear about the storm AstraZeneca’s admission has caused on social media – and quite rightly.
