The Internet Archive, a non-profit digital library, has recently faced a series of challenges. The Archive offers several services and features, including the Wayback Machine, Archive-It, Internet Archive Scholar and Open Library.

The Wayback Machine, is back up, with some limits, after spending nearly a week offline in the wake of a data breach and denial of service attack.

The Internet Archive is a nonprofit digital library website that preserves and provides access to historical and current versions of websites, as well as other digital materials such as books, music and movies. Founded in 1996, by Brewster Kahle, the organisation is headquartered in San Francisco, California.

The Internet Archive and its Wayback Machine are a unique, irreplaceable resource recording decades of web history.

According to Axios, the attack on the archive became public on 9 October, when visitors to the site were met with a taunting popup that read, “Have you ever felt like the Internet Archive runs on sticks and is constantly on the verge of suffering a catastrophic security breach? It just happened. See 31 million of you on HIBP!”

HIBP is a website users visit to check if their data was leaked in a cyberattack.

The Internet Archive suffered a major data breach, exposing the personal information of 31 million users.  Concurrently, the organisation was hit by Distributed Denial-of-Service (“DDoS”) attacks, which disrupted its services.

After a brief outage, the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, a free online tool that lets users view old versions of websites, returned online on 14 October 2024 but in a read-only state. Users can now access the 916 billion web pages already saved by the website but adding new pages is still unavailable, Kahle said on Monday.

The Internet Archive is operating in a limited capacity to prevent further damage and ensure the security of its systems. The organisation is working to restore its services and fully address the underlying issues.

Kahle says the site will return to its full functionality in “days, not weeks.”

While previously it was a hobby culminating in writing articles for Wikipedia (until things made a drastic and undeniable turn in 2020) and a few books for private consumption, since March 2020 I have become a full-time researcher and writer in reaction to the global takeover that came into full view with the introduction of covid-19. For most of my life, I have tried to raise awareness that a small group of people planned to take over the world for their own benefit. There was no way I was going to sit back quietly and simply let them do it once they made their final move.
