Could it be that when we act on impulse or have a hunch about something, we are using information that has been fed into our brains without our knowledge? Dr. Vernon Coleman asks.
Subliminal messaging involves presenting words or images below the threshold of conscious awareness, often for less than one-tenth of a second. The messages will register with our subconscious minds only.
Subliminal manipulation is often considered harmless because its effects typically decay within a second. However, one study suggests that subliminal messages might have long-term effects on decision-making, particularly if the messages contain novel information that must be relationally bound in long-term memory.
According to Campaign, subliminal advertising has been illegal in the UK, America and Australia since 1958. This ban was put in place following public concerns raised by studies and claims about the manipulative power of subliminal messages. Despite this, some advertisers have attempted to use subliminal techniques within legal boundaries.
How about films, music, social media content or even news reports? Could subliminal messages be used in those? How would we even know?
Subliminal messaging is one example Dr. Coleman uses to point out that much of what we see is not consciously registered by our brains.

If subliminal messages are flashed onto TV or cinema screens the messages will register with our subconscious minds only.
Researchers have shown that aircrew members taught to press buttons when they have spotted enemy aircraft will sometimes press them when the aircraft have been there but they have not knowingly seen them. The unconscious ability to see is, it seems, sometimes stronger than its conscious counterpart.
To illustrate this point an experiment was organised in which individuals watching nonsense words being projected onto a cinema screen were given shocks when certain words were shown. Predictably, the experiment showed that the volunteers exhibited the same sort of responses as Pavlov’s dogs. They began to show physical signs of fear every time they saw a word which would be accompanied by a shock.
What these researchers also revealed, however, was that when words which should have been associated with electrical shocks by the volunteers were falsely identified by their conscious minds their bodies nevertheless responded accurately, unconsciously making correct identifications.
And if that doesn’t impress you, consider this: a boy who was taught to blink when he heard someone say the number ten also began to blink when he heard people say sums, the answers to which were ten. Thus he would automatically blink when he heard the numbers 92-82, 65-55 and so on. Somehow the automatic reflex he had acquired had linked into a part of his brain that was capable of doing small sums.
Whatever else we may suspect about our eyesight we do know now that we have a lot to learn. Could it be, for example, that when we act on impulse, or have a hunch about something, we are using information that has been fed into our brains without our knowledge?

A few months I became suspicious of something that has appeared in many YouTube videos. It is not subliminal because it can be seen, but I wondered if it has some sort of brainwashing or mind-altering effect.
What I am talking about is in videos where someone is talking directly to the camera, head and shoulders shots, and the picture “jumps”. It could be just sloppy editing where they have done a re-take of part of their monologue and spliced it in, but it happens so many times that editing doesn’t seem like the answer.
Also, it is happening in so many videos that I doubt it is a mere coincidence. Could it be a fashion and they think it helps to keeps the viewer paying attention?
Has anyone else noticed it?

I’ve noticed it but never made the association you did …… and I say “Why not?” Why wouldn’t people use subliminal messaging in this way? It seems like the rule of the day has become to violate all norms of consideration and honour and legality. But I’d just point to the fact that you have become suspicious of these things. That, to me, is the workings of intuition, telling you to pay attention. We can trust our intuition …..
You can look at the same phenomenon from the opposite viewpoint – what if our hunches and impulses to action come from a spiritual domain? People who study these things say your intuition will never lead you into harm, so I guess one way to know which domain your impulses are coming from is if they lead you into harm or away from harm …….?
