As a controversial whistle-blower at the BBC, popular YouTuber and journalist Alex Belfield, formerly of BBC Radio Leeds, attracted some big enemies with secrets they did not want revealed – “ask Huw Edwards,” he points out. A witch hunt ensued – entirely orchestrated by the BBC – to “close him down.”
On 16 September 2022, Belfield was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for four counts of online stalking. The case brought against Belfield was by two state organisations: the BBC and Nottinghamshire Police.

According to His Majesty’s Prison Service (“HMPS”) figures, Belfield presents a 0.17% risk to the public.
After being imprisoned for 2.9 years, Belfield has returned and is now speaking out once again. There are things he has been waiting to say for nearly three years, he said.
Belfield made good use of his time in prison. He wrote 6 books. As he says on his website:

Alex’s books were all handwritten and edited whilst in prison at HMP Lincoln, HMP Stocken, HMP Five Wells, HMP Erlestoke and HMP Fosse Way between 2022 and 2025. Alex did not use a tippy tappy or a ghostwriter – just a pen, paper and a lot of brain power over 31 months! What you will read is the warts and all. No airs and graces. It’s not “nice” – it’s a series of mémoires of over 40 years of a media mogul’s life and the establishment’s finely choreographed witch-hunt to “close him down.”

In the first 5 minutes of his comeback show, Belfield uses wit and humour to get his message across: The establishment is working to keep certain individuals, which Belfield jokingly calls “nonsensers,” off the streets, ensuring public safety by locking up people deemed a risk, including those who speak out against the establishment with a 0.17% risk to the public.
In 2020, the Nottingham police conducted illegal raids on Belfield’s home, without warrants, confiscating his microphone three times. Well, now he is making a comeback, he said, waving the offending microphone in the air.
The police were harassing Belfield because the establishment wanted Belfield to go away quietly. He was talking about topics they didn’t want him to discuss, such as Black Lives Matter (“BLM”) “buying large mansions (“BLM”).” But he refused.

Belfield is thrilled to be back and will be using YouTube, despite the risk of being banned, he said. He is introducing a new concept called “Make Britain Laugh Again” (“MBLA”), which will include merchandise.
He expressed his gratitude to his supporters while he was in prison, mentioning that he received a large number of letters from the public, which he referred to as his “box of love” which he hung on his “wall of hope.”
“People have saved my life,” he said. “The general public who kept me alive with all of this [pointing to a large number of cards and letters he had received and kept]. This is my box of love that ended up on my wall of hope … there are thousands of them. Every single day, I had a pile of letters. I was driven by my piles. And I just want to thank everybody for being so kind .”
Some of the letters and cards were taken by the authorities at HMPS, but Belfield still has thousands of them.
Despite being deemed a 0.17% risk to the public, Belfield was told he would not have a public platform again, but his lawyers have ensured his right to free speech. YouTube is still attempting to silence Belfield, and in fact was attempting to remove his comeback video. But this is not going to stop Belfield. He plans to continue his work, including a tour, publishing his books and daily news updates, which will be available on his website and YouTube channel.
Belfield plans to resume his regular podcast schedule, including Wednesday and Sunday night broadcasts at 9:00, and will discuss various topics, including the prison service and the release of violent prisoners.
He shared his experience of being in five different prisons over the 2.9 years, and said that despite the challenges, safety and protection were provided by the other prisoners and some of the prison staff, allowing for a sense of security and normalcy.
He said that there are people who are still trying to get him cancelled and that a local newspaper has been attempting to destroy his character, reputation and business, which has been their livelihood for 30 years. “30 years in show business, in 2025, and I’m proud of it. I’m proud of my legacy [and] what I’ve achieved … But there’s been a real price for this.”
“Will we make it through the next 2.9 years without going back to the pokey [jail]. It’s unlikely in this climate,” he said. Nevertheless, “the party begins. We move on. We draw a line under the past and we begin the Voice of Reason 2025 at alexbelfield.com.”
