Once upon a time, there used to be a 25 hour documentary on YouTube called “The Greatest Story Never Told” – long since scrubbed from the internet – which told Hitler’s story from a small child until his death. Part of the story was that, as he was reunifying Germany, he paid state visits to many countries around the world to elaborate his National Socialism (“Nationalism without Capitalism, and Socialism without Communism”), including Moslem countries. Apparently, his ideas were very favourably met, and, as presents, he’d had a whole lot of Koran’s printed up (in Arabic) with a gold-embossed swastika on the cover – so truly socialist ideas are seemingly not so incompatible with Islam. We recoil in horror these days when we see a swastika, but at that time, in the ’30’s, there were no such connotations. Hitler went as far as Communist China in his tour, and the Chinese received him very favourably too, and he had similar gifts for them (can’t remember what). That doco is long since gone for it’s tendency to call into question certain tales about that war which have been used for political leverage but, for a bit of an inside look into the forces at work that created WWII, you can still find on YouTube a doco called Hitler’s War: What The Historians Neglect To Mention. Truth is what will save us, not ideology.
