Pew Research Centre has completed its first comprehensive update of the world’s religious composition in more than a decade, revealing which religious group is largest across 201 countries and territories.
This map shows the largest religious group in every country based on self-identification as of 2020, using estimates from Pew Research Centre’s Religious Composition by Country dataset, published in June 2025 and updated in February 2026.
Christianity is the World’s Leading Religion in 123 Countries
Christianity dominates the map across the Americas, Europe, much of sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania. Islam forms another striking geographic belt, stretching from West Africa through the Middle East and into Central and South Asia.

The United States maintains a Christian majority at 64.0% of its population, while Canada stands at 53.3%. In the United Kingdom, the share of self-identifying Christians falls just short of a majority at 49.4%.
Yemen and Afghanistan are the most religiously uniform places on the map, at 99.9% Muslim, just ahead of the 99.5% Christian shares in Timor-Leste and Moldova.
Israel is the only country where Judaism is the largest religious group, at 77.0% of the population. Taiwan is similarly unique on the map, with Daoism leading at 51.7%.
Only Two Countries’ Leading Religion Changed Since 2010
Despite substantial shifts within countries, only New Zealand and Uruguay changed their largest religious group between 2010 and 2020. Both shifted from Christian-led populations to religiously unaffiliated majorities, at 51.4% and 52.4%, respectively.
They sit at the leading edge of a wider Western shift. Brazil’s 2022 census put the Catholic share of its population at 56.7%, down from 65.1% a decade earlier. Meanwhile, the share of Americans with no religion has settled near 29%, nearly double its 2007 level, even as the largest non-Christian religion varies widely from state to state.
The United Kingdom, Australia, and France may be next in line. In all three, Christianity now leads with less than half the population, while the runner-up is no religion at all.
Countries Where the Largest Religion Isn’t a Majority
In seven countries, the leading religion is a plurality rather than a majority: the UK, Australia, and France (Christian), Côte d’Ivoire (Muslim), South Korea (religiously unaffiliated), Mauritius (Hindu), and Singapore, where Buddhists lead with just 30.8%, the lowest leading share on the map.
Some countries carry bigger caveats. Côte d’Ivoire’s Muslim lead over Christians is just 1.4 percentage points, effectively too close to call. Nigeria’s 56.1% Muslim share is modelled because the country hasn’t asked about religion in a census since 1963.
The map’s two biggest cells are also its most uncertain. China’s 89.6% religiously unaffiliated share, covering 1.28 billion people, rests on a single survey question about formal religious identity that Pew itself calls a conservative measure of Buddhist and folk practice. India’s 79.4% Hindu share still carries forward figures from the 2011 census, and the country’s 2027 census will recount religion for the first time in 16 years.
For now, New Zealand and Uruguay are the only countries where the largest religious group changed between 2010 and 2020. But with Christianity already below 50% in the UK, Australia, and France, future updates could add more countries to that list.

The lawlessness is not due to disobeying positive or man-made laws but due to disobedience to God. And the more lawless the world is, the closer we are to the end.

Religions are belief systems which exist because the true nature of reality, the existential reality, is only known by a small minority of people.
Gnosticism was already a thing in biblical times – it’s not original. Just an everyday heresy which will not lead its followers anywhere good.

I had an experience a couple of years ago when I was in a bus passing Brentwood Roman Catholic Cathedral, in Essex, UK, and prayed “Lord, bless them” (obviously intending that the blessing should include being led into all truth), and He said to me “Who’s the “them”? They are part of my Bride, though in error.” That doesn’t mean that there could not be a point where the Roman Catholic hierarchy is so out of order that He completely disowns them, and it certainly doesn’t mean that the Reformation is to be regretted – but there are faithful people on the ground whom He will not give up, albeit that He may lead them out.
Hi Alkflaeda, I too will not judge anyone who calls themselves a Christian (unless they are very obviously not and using Christianity as a facade to hide behind for nefarious purposes). The reason I won’t, is because of how Revelations begins: with letters to the seven churches.
In the letters, Jesus gave each of the seven churches different praise and admonishment, which implies we are to expect at least 7 different types/denominations of Christians or, put another way, several specific beliefs within the Christian church as a whole. It is not a recognition that God varies according to a person’s feelings or desires (He is the one God, the same God for all, and He stays the same, He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, there is only one truth for all), rather that we are all imperfect and none of us are without fault.
As Christians, we can of course correct each other, and we should. But judgement is for Christ alone. The important thing for all Christians to hold onto is that it is God (YHWH) who we follow, and only God. We have a personal relationship with God. It is not a threesome involving a priest or a scholar or a “saint” to interpret things for us or tell us what we should do, it is a one to one personal relationship between a person and God.

Religion destroys spirituality. It controls and divides the masses. Christianity/ the bible was put together by Constantine and his bishops at Nicea in the 3rd century for.this purpose. Its no coincidence Romans 13 declares that all authorities are put there by God to be obeyed. In fact ALL religious doctrines contain very dangerous ideas.
My understanding is that Romans 13 applies until there is a conflict between obeying God and obeying men – when that happens, we are to obey God.
Jesus instructed us to pray: ” Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name…” YHWH is the name of the father in Hebrew. Hebrew was written without vowels. Yahweh is likely the most accurate English translation of the four Hebrew vowels.
The number of people following islam, the doctrine of conquest, destruction and evil is the only thing that really matters in the end.
The end of human civilization, especially in western Europe comes in view due to the growth of this evil doctrine.
There is hope, though. Many young people born into Islam are apostasising – see Dr David Wood’s You Tube videos on the “Avalanche of Apostasy”. Bearing in mind that other Muslims could kill them, and their families may believe that they have a duty to do so, one wonders how many there are in addition who have not openly disavowed Islam, but do not identify with its tenets.The internet exposes the fallacies within Islam, and it is no longer possible for imams to defend them. It is not a coincidence that Western countries are banning social media for young people (to my mind, they should be requiring better housekeeping from the actual sites).
There is a pervasive belief that religion leads to the truth of mankind, unfortunately religion (and that is all of them ) only serves those that control them.
To be a Christian doesn’t mean one is religious.
In fact, Jesus stated that he was the last of the priesthood!

If you follow man, then you risk being misled. This applies to all aspects of life, whether it be covid, climate change, DEI or any other belief, whether labelled as a religion or not.
A word of warning: Believing that you know so much, you cannot err and you are without fault so that you can trust your own judgement above all else, is akin to following man – except in this case that man is yourself, and its called arrogance. God warns people about their arrogance and the trouble it can get them into (you will see the term “stiff necked” frequently used in the Bible, which refers to people being stubborn in believing they know best, better than God) – “pride before a fall” about sums it up.
I agree with you in one respect: Christians are not religious. Being religious implies that certain rituals need to be performed to please God. Since Jesus came to Earth to fulfil God’s law, God/Jesus/Holy Spirit does not demand we perform rituals to demonstrate our piety, He demands one thing only – that we have faith in His Son, Jesus (Yeshua, the Messiah, the Christ). So Christianity is not a religion, it is a faith – the only true faith.
When one follows religion, that directly ignores God our father. The difference is subtle but the implication are serious.

To expand on what I was saying. I do not follow a religion. I have faith in God (YHWH, Yahweh, Adonai, Jehovah). There is only one God but He is three Persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus, Yeshua, the Messiah, the Christ) and God the Holy Spirit.
The difference between a religion and faith is important to understand as the ramifications could be the difference between life and death, and the distinction between the two is not subtle.
A religion requires rituals to demonstrate a person’s obedience to a belief system. Whether that belief system be covid or satanism. Rituals signify obedience to and in some cases it is believed the follower can be saved or earns their salvation and/or eternal life through these rituals.
You will note that Christianity is the only belief that does not require rituals – and there is good reason for that. We cannot earn our salvation, it is given by the grace of God through faith in His Son Jesus. Christianity is a faith, not a religion and Christianity is THE ONLY true faith.
If someone professes to be a Christian, yet performs rituals – whether those rituals are for the forgiveness of sins or anything else – they need to reassess their relationship with God. Because God does not demand rituals, He demands faith. For example, we cannot earn or buy forgiveness from God; our forgiveness is freely given through faith in His Son Jesus. It is this faith that sets Christians apart from all religions/cults.

Hi Stuart James, from the beginning mankind has been divided. Have you forgotten the story of Cain and Abel?
Cain murdered his brother Abel because he was jealous of him. As punishment, Cain was cast out by God from the land where Adam and Eve lived (this is the land where God visited/walked amongst mankind so, in a symbolic way, Cain was cast out from God’s presence).
Cain and his progeny then went on to found the spurious religion (which now has numerous branches and offshoots) based on an evil (demonic/satanic) corruption of the seven sciences (now referred in the occult as gnosis, “secret knowledge” or “light”) – one of the seven sciences being geometry, a corrupted (satanically inspired) version of which is the foundation of Freemasonry.
Another example of God separating (dividing) mankind is the Tower of Babel.
What is one of the lessons we can learn from the Cain and Abel story? We need to remember that not everyone is our neighbour. And to protect his children, even those not yet born, God will separate (divide) mankind. Do not fear division, fear God (YHWH), Jesus (Yeshua, the Christ, the Messiah) and the Holy Spirit.
