Four wildfires are currently burning around Los Angeles, with two others now described as being contained.  The largest of the wildfires is Palisades. 

Climate cultists immediately came out saying the fires were caused by climate change.  One such propagandist was Michael “Hockey Stick” Mann of Climategate fame. He attributed the fires to climate change and an “addiction to fossil fuels.”  But, as suspected, was he simply using a crisis to spread climate change propaganda?

On Friday, California State Parks announced the arrest of a suspect on a charge of felony arson related to a brush fire that ignited on 8 January near Leo Carrillo State Park, which was quickly extinguished by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Now a report by the Washington Post suggests that a New Year’s Eve fire caused by fireworks may have led to the Palisades fire.

An investigation into photos, videos, satellite imagery and radio communications revealed that the Palisades fire started in the same area where firefighters had previously put out a blaze six days earlier believed to have been caused by fireworks.

The possibility that the New Year’s Eve fire reignited and caused the Palisades fire is being considered, as experts say that this can occur in windy conditions.  Terrain scorched but seemingly extinguished can spawn deadly new fires for weeks after the old ones appear to have gone out, as fire can smoulder almost undetected underground or inside wood.

“From Colorado to California to Hawaii, flare-ups of previous fires, known as reignition, have been the cause of some of the nation’s most catastrophic and deadly wildfires,” The Washington Post said.

According to The Washington Post, authorities have known from the start of the fire on Tuesday that smoke began where the earlier fire, believed by residents to have been sparked by fireworks, occurred.  In addition, satellite imagery taken mid-morning on Tuesday indicates that the origin of the smoke overlapped with the burn scar from the New Year’s Eve fire.

The Palisades area has a persistent problem with fireworks, as people from other parts of Los Angeles often set them off in open spaces, despite the dry conditions and risk of wildfires.

A resident in the area told the Washington Post that the wildfires were “started by idiots” on New Year’s Eve, emphasising the need for people to be more responsible with fire in dry conditions.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has taken the lead on the investigation into the cause of the Palisades fire. In response to questions about reignition as a possible cause, the LA Fire Department said, “This is an ongoing, active investigation and the team will not comment on an ongoing investigation.”

According to CalFire, the Palisades fire has affected 23,713 acres and is 11 per cent contained, while two other active fires in the area, the Eaton fire and the Hurst fire, have affected 14,117 acres and 799 acres, respectively, and are 27 per cent and 89 per cent contained.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities interviewing residents and gathering evidence to determine the exact cause of the Palisades fire.
