Children go hungry as private firms profit from tax payer funded food parcels

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Fury has erupted throughout the country as parents shared their disgust via social media of the pathetic food parcels which have been brought in by the government in replacement of the £30 food vouchers that had been given to parents during the previous lockdowns.

The new scheme has seen contracts awarded to private firms to supply food parcels for children instead of the £30 voucher. The food is supposed to sustain families for 5-10 days but images show their is barely enough food to last the day within the food parcels.

One parent whose parcel contained just two potatoes, one tin of beans, eight cheese slices, two carrots, three apples, three frubes, one load of bread, some pasta and a tomato, cross checked the cost of the contents against Asda’s prices and found the total sum came to just £5.22p.

Canadian comedian Katherine Ryan also hit out on Twitter demanding the government “just give out vouchers”.

The food parcels handed out are supposed to be equal to £30 worth of food, meaning the private firms awarded the contracts are making £25 profit per parcel. One of those private firms is catering company Chartwells, part of Compass Group. A spokesman for Chartwells said the following –

“We take our responsibility to provide children with access to nutritious food very seriously. We have worked hard to produce food hampers at incredibly short notice during these challenging times. Three metre rule could be brought in in order to stop Covid spread as cases rise ‘Our hampers follow the DofE specifications and contain a variety of ingredients to support families in providing meals throughout the week. In the majority of instances, we have received positive feedback. ‘In this instance, the image on Twitter falls short of our hamper specification and we are keen to investigate with the relevant school so we can address any operational issues that may have arisen.”

One thing for sure is that that stakeholders in the private firms awarded the food parcel contacts will most likely have connections to members of Boris’s current Tory Cabinet.
