Matt Hancock stated that he “knows these action have consequences” and that he knows “how difficult it is” but said he also knows “that it is right to take the action that is necessary to control the virus.

The Health Secretary continued by saying he knows “the pain that this causes” but said “against a backdrop of rising infections it is absolutely vital that act, we simply cannot have the kind of Christmas that we yearn for.”

Hancock claimed that the government knows “that the 3 tiered system was working to control the old variant of the virus,” but that they also know “tier 3 is not enough to control the new variant.”

The Health Secretary stated this was “Fact” and they know this from what they are seeing on the ground.

Show us the facts then Mr Hancock?

It was at this point that Hancock announced further draconian restrictions for more of the East, South East and some of the South West. Throwing places such as Sufflok, Cambridgeshire, Waverly , Surrey, Portsmouth and Southampton into Tier 4.

He also announced places such as Bristol, Somerset, Swindon and the Isle of White would be thrown into Tier 3, as well as announcing Cornwall and Herefordshire would go into Tier 2.

Hancock stated this would all take effect from 00:01 on boxing day, and that the public will comply because they know how important it is to keep people safe and protect the NHS.

The Health Secretary then announced that they had detected another “new variant” of the supposed coronavirus in 2 people who had recently returned from South Africa. He went on to state that Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer had met his South African counterparts and thanked them for their cooperation. Hancock claimed this new variant is more transmissible and has mutated further than the “UK mutation”.

This lead to the announcement that the Government was placing immediate restrictions on travel from South Africa. Saying that “Anyone in the UK who has been in South Africa in the last fortnight, and all their close contacts must quarantine immediately.”

The Health Secretary then came out with yet another advertisement for people to get tested, even if they have no symptoms. He announced they were continuing to rapidly expand their testing capability and had expanded their community testing and said “I urge anyone who has the opportunity to take part and protect their local area.”

Matt Hancock ended his statement by saying he know’s how hard 2020 has been for everyone and that this Christmas and the start of 2021 are going to be tough, stating that “the new variant makes everything much harder, but we mustn’t give up now, we know we can control this virus, and get through this together, we’re going to get through this by suppressing the virus until a vaccine can make use safe.”
